In 2001, after a former life working in the aquarium trade, a BSc degree at Stirling University, followed by an MSc at Glasgow, Jonny Archer joined the Tweed Foundation biology team. Fulfilling Trout duties taken on from his predecessor, Kenny Galt, Jonny has overseen the evolution of the trout logbook scheme, with an online recording system replacing paper logbooks. Perhaps the highlight of the three years has been a three-year Brown trout tracking study, which involved many very late evening sessions to catch trout, which was often feast and famine. Jonny was inspired to take up trout fishing, with plenty of invaluable advice from local expert anglers, with one or two takeable trout entering his landing net before he left.
Jonny also took forward the water temperature monitoring and research in the Tweed catchment. Adding to the work of the Marine Directorate to model water temperature for prioritising tree planting, Jonny has established a network of loggers to study the effects of freshets from reservoirs.
After three years with the team, Jonny has now moved on to work for the Marine Directorate. Jonny is now part of a team that is looking at the potential interactions between migratory fish and marine wind farm developments, with plenty of time to work with his beloved stats package known as ‘r’. With a proliferation of marine wind farms potentially in the migration path of Tweed salmon smolts, the work that Jonny is involved in will help to provide an informed opinion on any potential impacts.
