Fishing has long been a cherished pastime, offering tranquillity, a connection with nature, and a chance to unwind from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, for those with mobility challenges, accessing and enjoying fishing can be difficult. The collaborative efforts of the Tweed Foundation, the River Tweed Commission (R.T.C.) and the Wheelyboat Trust resulted in the design of the Tweedability boat.
Tweedability boats are specially designed to enable less-able anglers to fish the River Tweed for Atlantic Salmon and Seatrout with ease and safety. These boats have been specially tailored for use on the Tweed, ensuring that anglers can remain in their wheelchairs throughout the fishing experience. Accessing the boat is seamless, thanks to a ramp that extends from the bank and a hydraulic lift inside the boat that lowers users to the optimal height for fishing.
Availability and Booking
Despite the additional ballast weight that provides extra stability, Tweedability boats remain highly manouverable. They can be powered by an outboard motor or rowed manually, offering flexibility to suit the beat. When river heights are low the boat is not suitable for use.
Currently, there are two Tweedability boats available for any disabled or less-able angler wishing to fish the River Tweed. However, due to the need to move them around the river, access arrangements must be made in advance. Please contact your booking agent or beat direct to check if the wheelyboat can be used on the beat first.
