The Tweed Foundation is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join its award-winning team as an Education and Community Engagement Officer.
The Tweed Foundation is a charitable trust dedicated to protecting, improving and enhancing populations of all native freshwater fish species within the River Tweed catchment. Working at the forefront of fisheries science and river conservation, the Foundation delivers an extensive programme of biological monitoring, habitat restoration, freshwater ecology research and practical catchment management aimed at safeguarding the Tweed’s internationally important fish stocks and maximising the river’s natural productivity.
The Foundation works closely with the River Tweed Commission, the statutory body responsible for the protection and management of salmon and freshwater fisheries within the River Tweed system.
Education, training, and public engagement are central to the work of the Tweed Foundation. The Foundation delivers one of the largest river-focused environmental education programmes in the Scottish Borders, engaging schools, volunteers, anglers, and local communities across the Tweed catchment through hands-on learning, citizen science, and practical river-based experiences.
The successful candidate will contribute to a growing programme of environmental education and outreach initiatives, including the highly regarded “Go Wild for Fish” schools programme, “Trout in the Classroom”, the award winning “TweedStart” angling development initiative and the Foundation’s expanding citizen science programme “Guardians of the Tweed”.
The role will also support the Ian Gregg Rivers Academy, based at the Foundation’s headquarters, through which the Foundation delivers practical environmental training in areas including the Anglers’ Riverfly Monitoring Initiative (ARMI), water chemistry analysis, aquatic invertebrate monitoring and the study of piscivorous bird prey diets. We are also a partner of Inspire Learning, the multi-award-winning education transformation programme in the Scottish Borders
The position will involve developing educational resources and training programmes, delivering practical outdoor learning sessions and events, building partnerships and supporting wider public engagement activity across the river system.
The successful applicant will be self-motivated, passionate about improving the environment and committed to engaging young people and communities through hands-on conservation education and river-based learning. Strong communication and project delivery skills are essential, alongside experience within the environmental or educational sector. Knowledge of the Tweed catchment, fisheries management, angling and land or water management would be advantageous.
This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the UK’s leading river conservation and fisheries science organisations and help inspire the next generation of environmental stewards across the River Tweed & Eye catchment
