• Kelso Resident Convicted of Salmon Poaching on River Tweed
  • Kelso, United Kingdom - On January 11th, a male resident of Kelso appeared in Berwick Magistrates Court after being apprehended for salmon poaching with rod and line on the Cornhill beat of the River Tweed. The defendant pleaded guilty to all three charges brought against him.

  1. The individual was sentenced for the primary offence of fishing by an illegal method on his own (Article 22). Additionally, no separate penalties were imposed for the offences of fishing on a Sunday (Article 35) and fishing without permission (Article 27). The court ordered fines totalling £262.00, along with an order for forfeiture and destruction of all seized items. The defendant was instructed to fulfil the financial orders within 14 days.

  • Simultaneously, on the same day, two other males from Coldstream and Cornhill also appeared in Berwick Magistrates Court for similar offences, having been caught salmon poaching with rod and line on the River Till near Twizel Bridge. Both defendants pleaded guilty to all three charges.

  • They were sentenced for the main offence of fishing by an illegal method with another person (Article 28), with no separate penalties imposed for fishing on a Sunday (Article 35) and fishing without permission (Article 27). The defendant from Coldstream was fined £326.00, including a surcharge of £93.00, while the defendant from Cornhill was fined £840.00, including a surcharge of £240.00. The court also ordered forfeiture and destruction of all seized items from both defendants.

  • It is noted that intelligence provided by Tweed Boatmen to the Bailiff team played a significant role in apprehending the individual at Cornhill.

  • In both cases, it is commendable to witness the magistrates treating the offences with the appropriate level of seriousness they deserve.
