The Tweed Foundation, a leading Scottish environmental charity dedicated to the health of the Tweed & Eye District's aquatic ecosystems and Atlantic salmon, is pleased to announce the appointment of Cody McFarlane as its new Biologist and Operations Team Leader.
Cody brings a wealth of expertise to the Tweed Foundation, where she will play a pivotal role in implementing the River Tweed management plan and overseeing the operational aspects of the environmental charity's annual work programme for salmon, trout, grayling, and other vital fish species within the Tweed catchment.
A recent MSc Wildlife Biology and Conservation graduate from Edinburgh Napier University, Cody also holds a BSc (Hons) in Applied Bioscience and Zoology from the University of the West of Scotland. She brings a solid foundation in educational outreach, ecological survey techniques, data analysis, and leadership, complemented by practical experience in habitat assessments, aquatic surveys, and GIS spatial analysis. Cody also has a strong understanding of river ecology and conservation practices, making her an ideal fit for this crucial role of safeguarding the Tweed’s natural resources.
Jamie Stewart, Head of the Tweed Foundation, "We are pleased to welcome Cody to the team. Her skills will be invaluable as we continue our critical work to protect the River Tweed's Atlantic Salmon and its unique fish populations and their habitats. This appointment strengthens our goal to help create a healthier river system for residents and visitors to the Tweed district, now and for future generations."
Cody's responsibilities include liaising with landowners, supervising summer assistants and work experience students. She will also be instrumental in outreach efforts, participating in conferences and fish events, and producing articles for the Tweed Foundation website, the Tweed News blog, and the Annual Report.
On the scientific front, Cody will be crucial in managing and analysing data to inform robust management decisions, directly contributing to a healthier river for all. This plan is rigorously scrutinised by a technical advisory group and scientific panel, ensuring all the Tweed Foundation’s scientific work is of the highest standard for maximum environmental impact.
A particular focus of the current work plan is an audit of the Tweed catchment to prioritise habitat improvement. This includes participation in the SRTMN programme, utilising data collected by The Tweed Foundation to guide tree planting for river shading and informing freshet releases from reservoirs. Cody will also lead research and monitoring for Brown trout and Grayling, including the angling logbook scheme, organise and participate in electro-fishing monitoring surveys, and assist with smolt trapping. Her work will also involve writing comprehensive reports and papers on fish data, habitat, stocks, and behaviours.
