During the main salmon spawning period on the Tweed catchment, from late October through November, there have been numerous reports of Atlantic salmon exhibiting Saprolegnia infection before spawning. Saprolegnia is a type of water mould, with the white / grey mycelium progressively colonising the fish's skin. This condition can lead to significant health issues for the affected fish.
James Hunt, Tweed Foundation senior biologist, has been actively involved in addressing concerns related to salmon health and population declines. In 2024, he participated in the Wild Salmon Strategy Science and Evidence Board, contributing to discussions on stocking and conservation strategies for wild salmon populations
The Tweed Foundation, established in 1983, engages in extensive biological monitoring and habitat enhancement to protect, and improve fish stocks in the River Tweed. Their efforts include research on fish diseases like Saprolegnia and initiatives to boost salmon survival rates.
The decline in salmon populations is a pressing concern across the UK. Recent reports indicate that Atlantic salmon stocks have reached record lows, with pollution and climate change being significant contributing factors. The Tweed Foundation's ongoing research and conservation efforts are crucial in addressing these challenges and working towards the restoration of healthy salmon populations in the River Tweed.
